Hand-knotted burgundy Barge Chenar runner rug 85x778 cm – authentic Afghan runner rug

Afghan Barge Chenar runner rug: dimensions, material and making

This 85 × 778 cm Afghan Barge Chenar runner rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.

The Barge Chenar runner rug measures 85 cm in width, 778 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a hallway.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Afghan Barge Chenar runner rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Caring for your Barge Chenar runner rug

For routine care of the Afghan Barge Chenar runner rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
