Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug: details of the selected size
This Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 97 × 881 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.
The Khal Mohammadi runner rug measures 97 cm in width, 881 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. This size may also be suitable for a hallway.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
Caring for your Khal Mohammadi runner rug
When cleaning the Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.
With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
