Suleymani Oriental rug 97x153 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan Suleymani rug hand-knotted from wool

The key features of this Afghan Suleymani rug are its 97 × 153 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. The rug has a burgundy and beige colour palette.

The Suleymani rug measures 97 cm in width, 153 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000–200,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Suleymani rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 97 cm and length of 153 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

When cleaning the Afghan Suleymani rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
