Waziri Afghan rug 203x290 cm – handmade rug

Afghan Waziri rug: features of the knotted pile

This Afghan Waziri rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 203 × 290 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy and blue define the colour palette of the rug.

The Waziri rug measures 203 cm in width, 290 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Waziri rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 203 cm and length of 290 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Caring for your Waziri rug

For routine care of the Afghan Waziri rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
