Origin of the Afghan Chobi Kelim rug
The Chobi Kelim rug is a highly popular choice, mainly due to its cheerful colours and timeless appeal. It is handwoven by nomads and villagers in the Maymanah province of Afghanistan. This type of wool Kelim rug is denser and more compact than other Kilims, making it exceptionally durable. A special weaving technique is used, which results in thinner rugs that are quicker to produce compared to traditional hand-knotted oriental rugs.
Each Chobi Kilim is made from 100% wool. After weaving, the rugs are washed four times and then left to dry naturally in the sun. While their design features warm, traditional antique patterns, many versions also include modern interpretations, making them a perfect match for a wide variety of interior styles.
These rugs are especially appreciated for the subtle elegance they bring to any space. Whether used as floor coverings or hung on the wall as decorative wall rugs, Chobi Kelims add character and charm to every room. Corridor runners are also available, offering stylish solutions for narrow spaces. Ideal for use in the living room or bedroom, they create a unique and inviting atmosphere in the home.
Chobi Kilim rugs are truly special and distinctive. They are crafted from the finest quality wool, originally made by nomadic tribes to warm their tents in the harsh climates of the region. Carpet weaving has been an essential part of Afghan culture for centuries, with skills and techniques passed down through generations. Producing a Chobi Kelim is a time-consuming and meticulous process that demands both patience and craftsmanship.
The result is a sophisticated, high-quality Kelim in cheerful, earthy colours that come to life in natural light, beautifully showcasing the richness of the wool’s natural tones.

Working conditions and financial recognition of Kilim rug weavers
Afghan Kilim rugs are traditionally woven in the Maymanah province of Afghanistan, primarily by Turkmen and Uzbek communities. These rugs are not produced in large-scale factories but are instead crafted within the homes of the weavers themselves. This domestic setting often makes it difficult to fully understand their working and living conditions.
Over several decades in the carpet trade, I have had the privilege of visiting numerous weavers in their homes. These visits allow us to ensure that the Kelim rugs we offer are not the result of forced child labour. I emphasise the term forced child labour deliberately, as such practices can occur in regions suffering from extreme poverty.
At CarpetDepo, we uphold strict ethical standards. We do not collaborate with families who compel their children to work instead of attending school. Respecting human rights is a core value of our company, and this ethical commitment supports sustainable and responsible manufacturing practices.
The production process of a Kilim rug begins when a trader provides wool yarn to the weaver. Inside their homes, the weavers use traditional looms to handcraft the rugs. Typically, one square metre of Kilim requires approximately 1.2 kg of wool yarn. Around 70% of Kilim weavers are women. In addition to managing their households, these women contribute to their families' income through rug weaving. They usually learn the craft from a young age—not through exploitation, but as part of a cherished cultural tradition.
Young girls often enjoy learning to weave, knowing it will become a valuable skill that contributes to their future livelihoods, particularly after marriage. This practice not only brings financial benefits, but also helps preserve and pass on cultural heritage. Boys, on the other hand, often lack the patience required for weaving and thus do not typically continue this tradition.
To support the weavers' livelihoods, payment is provided regularly. Rather than waiting for the entire Kelim to be completed—a process that can take several months—traders pay the weavers weekly, based on the sections completed. This continuous income provides stability and motivation.
Cultural customs are also strongly tied to the process. For example, if a weaver is hosting guests, she may need to pause her work to prepare food. In such cases, the female guests often join in to help with the weaving while engaging in lively conversation. This communal atmosphere reinforces the social and cultural significance of the craft and keeps it alive across generations.
Once a Kelim rug is completed, the trader collects it and delivers it to the washer, where it is washed three times and dried naturally in the sun. If sunlight is unavailable, powerful ventilators are used to complete the drying process. After that, the rug is sent to our warehouse and eventually delivered to the customer.
We kindly ask you to appreciate your Kilim rug—not only for the intricate craftsmanship and time it requires, but also for the rich folk tradition it embodies. Each rug is a testament to Afghan cultural identity, combining physical beauty with deep social and historical value.
Popularity of Chobi Kilim rug
The Chobi Kilim rug has grown significantly in popularity in recent years, with more and more people falling in love with its refined elegance and timeless charm. Versatile and stylish, the Chobi Kelim can be used in nearly any room of the home and is particularly well-suited for living rooms, hallways, and other high-traffic areas.
If you're looking to add vibrant colour and warmth to your interior with a high-quality handwoven rug, the Chobi Kilim is an excellent choice. Its sophisticated appearance, rich natural dyes, and traditional craftsmanship make it a truly standout piece in any space.
More than just a decorative item, a Kelim rug brings a sense of heritage and authenticity into the home. It pays tribute to centuries-old artisan skills and the detailed, patient work that goes into each handcrafted rug. Choosing a Chobi Kilim means bringing culture, colour, and craftsmanship into your living environment.
Cleaning and Maintenance of a wool Kelim Rug
Caring for an Afghan Chobi Kelim rug is simple and does not require any special expertise. Minor stains can be treated at home using a slightly damp cloth or a wool-safe carpet cleaning foam available in most shops. Always ensure the cleaning product is suitable for natural wool to avoid damaging the fibres.
For heavier or stubborn stains, we recommend seeking assistance from professional carpet cleaning services that have experience with handmade wool rugs.
When it comes to regular maintenance, the lowest setting on a vacuum cleaner is more than sufficient, as Kilim rugs do not typically trap dust particles deep within the weave. Avoid using powerful suction or brush rolls, as they may damage the delicate fibres over time.
There is an old myth suggesting that you should hang up your Kelim rug and beat it with a dusting stick. This is a misconception. Doing so can severely damage your handwoven rug, and we strongly advise against this outdated method—whether for Kelims or any other type of rug.
To keep your Chobi Kilim rug in excellent condition, treat it gently and clean it with care. With the proper attention, your rug will retain its beauty and value for decades to come.
